Ecosystems the way of the fintech future

Swiss tech giant, Avaloq, has high hopes for the future of fintech, pointing to an integrated ecosystem of start-ups that could look something like a larger-scale Silicon Valley. Avaloq’s group CTO, Thomas Beck, told Money Management that, while planners find siloed technology a problem, the solution was not to find one fintech to fix them all. Beck said leaving a particular solution to a fintech with the skillset to produce it is in fact best practice, but integrating all the vertical technologies on to the one platform would significantly improve efficiency and simplicity of use. Country head of Avaloq (Australia), Anantha Ayer, said the end goal was, at least in […]

FinTechAus reels as CEO departs

There are now discussions within the sector about the creation of a new, representative body separate to FinTech Australia, InnovationAus.com understands. But FinTech Australia chair Alan Tsen has defended the organisation’s track record, and said it’s impossible to please everyone in the wider sector all of the time. The lobby group’s chief executive Brad Kitschke, who took on the role in late May, tendered his resignation to the FinTech Australia board late last week, citing health concerns. The resignation comes at the busiest period of the year for FinTech Australia, with its two major conferences fast-approaching, the launch of its annual census, and the imminent passage of a series of […]

CSIRO and the University of Sydney’s Red Belly Blockchain breaks new ground for speed

The University of Sydney and CSIRO’s Data61 say they have successfully created a blockchain that can process a mass amount of transactions significantly more quickly than public blockchains, such as the one behind bitcoin. New trials of the Red Belly Blockchain run on Amazon Web Services infrastructure have shown an average transaction delay of only three seconds and a throughput of 30,000 transactions per second. In comparison, bitcoin processes only three to seven transactions per second and as of August had an average confirmation time for a transaction of 10-30 minutes (during peak trading periods in January this has reached as high as almost 3000 minutes per transaction), according to […]

ASIC warns all fintech business lenders over contracts

The corporate regulator wants all online business lenders to remove unfair terms from their contracts just like Prospa has done, indicating start-ups that want to compete against banks will be held to similar regulatory standards as community expectations lift following the royal commission. In a letter sent last week to Brad Kitschke, CEO of industry lobby group FinTech Australia, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission declared “action [is] required”. ASIC said it “will consider regulatory action where appropriate” if fintechs don’t comply with the 2016 laws that prevent lenders using excessive contractual power over business borrowers. Banks have already been forced by ASIC to make the changes, although Hayne royal […]

Policies to build a data economy

Australia has a rare opportunity to capture a disproportionately large proportion of emerging data economy, according to Reinventure Group co-founder and managing director Danny Gilligan. But the effort is going to take a top-down, nationally coordinated policy effort to build competitive and exportable regulatory frameworks for data. Mr Gilligan holds deeply the belief that data is the single biggest lever for delivering microeconomic and social reform in the next two decades and should be made a material part of policy development and trade considerations at all levels of thinking across both government and the private sector. The potential size of the global data economy is difficult to quantify. There is […]

ndau: World’s first “buoyant” stablecoin cryptocurrency revealed

Meet the unpegged, uncollateralised ndau, courtesy of finely-tuned tokenomic and governance elements. Stablecoins have been proliferating in the last few months. All of them are curious and flawed creations in their own way, and there are growing concerns that stablecoins of any kind, in principle, are economically impossible. But maybe ndau can buck the trend. The coin was just unveiled today, and is perhaps the most distinctive and advanced stablecoin that has been created to date. The best of both worlds, for the best of both worlds “Stable is good. Buoyant is better,” ndau says. The ndau Collective came together as a group of early bitcoin enthusiasts who aimed to […]
