Winklies, Dorsey Hunt Oz Biz

New York’s Winklevoss twins, the ex-Olympic rowers who famously – and unsuccessfully – sued Facebook for a fortune in 2011, claiming founder Mark Zuckerberg had stolen their idea, have confirmed plans to bring their bitcoin technology to Australia. The twins – Tyler and Cameron – who have since successfully set up a well-regarded bitcoin exchange in New York – have reportedly been negotiating with Melbourne-based Trimantium to help bring their blockchain technology Down Under. Their presence might well be welcomed here, given the problems the local industry has been experiencing, with one outfit, Bitcoin Group, recently refused entry to the ASX for want of an acceptable financial report (CDN, Feb. […]

ASIC talking to Singapore on fintech deal

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is talking to the Monetary Authority of Singapore about an agreement to ensure that regulation does not hinder the progress of fintech start-ups looking to operate across the countries’ borders. Fintech regulation has been a key agenda item at recent meetings of peak financial regulators across the globe and although the discussions between ASIC and MAS are at an early stage, it is understood both regulators are enthusiastic about seeing a deal come to fruition. The agreement would be based on a similar co-operation agreement between ASIC and the UK Financial Conduct Authority, which was signed just before Easter and was the first of […]

Fintech changes the shape of banking

Jesse McWaters is the project lead for disruptive innovation in financial services at the World Economic Forum. So in January, 2014, it seemed logical to bring together about 50 senior global financial services and banking types attending Davos to consider the impact of fintech. The judgement of the experts was clear. “Banks versus fintechs? No contest,” McWaters says. The banks were considered to be protected by their scale, by their levels of consumer trust and by the regulatory complexity of the financial system. The barrier was considered simply too high for fintech start-ups to become a threat. A year later, there had been a sea change in the mood of […]

Global regulators move closer to regulating fintech

Global regulators have moved closer to regulating the fledgling fintech sector, which includes blockchain technology that supports bitcoin, to ensure the industry’s rapid growth does not pose any risks to the financial system. The Financial Stability Board (FSB), which met in Tokyo on Thursday, has agreed on a framework for categorising different components of fintech and assessing their potential risks. The FSB, made up of central bankers, regulators and finance ministry officials from the Group of 20 economies, is looking at fintech partly in response to uncertainty over whether it will “disrupt” traditional banking. Some big investment banks, including Goldman Sachs , are already investing heavily in fintech to avoid […]

Fintech threat to banks at tipping point: Citi

Many bank customers can’t even reel off the name of a financial technology company. But the threat from fintech companies is set to get very real for banks and their workers in the next decade as 30 per cent of jobs are cut to slice costs, according to a major report by US giant Citi. “Fintech is changing the world of finance. In the US and Europe, we are at a tipping point, especially in consumer banking,” the global report said. It noted that fintech companies in China had already surpassed banks and had both scale and innovation. “To remain competitive, banks need to get innovation before the fintech companies […]

Can robots terminate the human adviser?

Financial planners and advisers would scoff at the idea of an automated system, or a robot, providing financial advice to clients based on answers to a few questions and the click of a button. Moreover, advisers are apprehensive of consumers embracing the do-it-yourself approach to investing, arguing that it is impossible for consumers to navigate complex investment choices and the myriad of financial products without guidance from trained advisers. Financial planning dealer group, Wealth Today’s managing director, Greg Pennells, recently labelled robo-advice a ‘cop-out’, and called on the corporate regulator to ban the technology. He said technology is useful for transactional services like buying and selling shares, stockbroking, mortgages, or […]

How to embrace change and survive digital disruption

Digital disruption is a trend that’s here to stay and no industry is safe. Traditional industries like manufacturing, transport, retail, tourism and hospitality, print media and entertainment may have been hit first, and hit hard, but it’s only a matter of time before others, including the advice industry, feel the heat. The banking and finance industry could lose almost a quarter of its revenue to fintech disrupters by 2021, based on a new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report, ‘Blurred lines: How Fintech is shaping financial services’, says the disruption of the financial sector is already underway. It’s currently reshaping the nature of consumer banking and payments, and a second wave […]

Insurers brace for mega fintech shake up

The insurance industry has largely remained the same in the past 100 years, but the sector is in for its biggest shake up as investors continue to pump billions of dollars into “insurtech”, fuelling sweeping changes through technology. Insurance is the second most disrupted industry today thanks to a growing number of start-ups and technology companies eyeing slices of the insurance pie. Research from PwC found that the global insurance industry ranked second only behind media and entertainment as the industry that is most significantly affected by technological change. And Australia, where the general insurance market is dominated by players such as Suncorp Group, IAG and QBE Insurance Group, is […]
