Fintech challenges Veda, Dun & Bradstreet

CreditSME – founded by Adam Welsh, a former M&A and debt at Origin Capital Group and Goldman Sachs – is offering a sort of broker role, giving them a credit rating and then advising them on which lenders would be the best for them – be it traditional bank or online unsecured lenders. CreditSME, launching on Wednesday, is the latest in an explosion of ex investment banker-led fintechs targeting the small businesses traditionally treated with disdain by the banks. But it’s not lending them money, rather it wants to give SMEs (and their lenders) easy access to a credit rating, just like a big business. There are various operators that […]

Tackling longer payment terms

InvoiceX, a recently established Australian loan company, has unveiled a new invoicing scheme to help struggling mining companies overcome the new challenges created by long payment terms. This comes following this year’s likely liquidation of Queensland nickel and Arrium’s voluntary administration. As banks are more likely to offer loans for land and real estate rather than liquid assets often incurred by mining, director of InvoiceX Dermot Crean questioned their motives. “What is the intent here? To put them [workers] out of business?” he asked, pointing to Rio’s now redacted decision. The company, which distinguishes itself from other peer to peer lending groups and consider themselves a market planner, has implemented […]

DomaCom lauds Morrison’s Kidman decision

Crowd funder DomaCom has welcomed the announcement by the Treasurer, Scott Morrison, that the sale of the giant Kidman Station to a Chinese consortium is “not in the national interest”. DomaCom CEO Arthur Naoumidis said it was “very pleasing” that the Government had heeded the outpouring of public sentiment on the proposed $370 million sale and had reached a “preliminary finding” to reject the bid by Dakang Australia Holdings. The company has until 3 May to respond. Morrison had earlier rejected a bid by a related Chinese company, the Penxing Group. DomaCom launched a 11th hour book-build late last year to keep Kidman Station in Australian hands, and in about […]

Fintech targets trillion dollar profits

Analysis by McKinsey and Co suggests the trillion dollar profits of traditional banks are vulnerable to being leeched by more than 12,000 fintech start ups. The digital innovators, often targeting a single link of the value chain, pose a grave threat to the business model of the old banking houses. Banks have long made their money by bundling a number of businesses together and relying on the stickiness of life-long customer relationships to rake in super profits on high margin products and services such as investment management, foreign exchange and credit cards. Challengers like Paypal, Nerdwallet and Wealthfront have targeted the profit centres while ignoring the low returns on basic […]

Sapien Ventures’ first fintech investment is in Hashching

Wealthy Chinese migrants will help disrupt the Australian mortgage broking industry via an investment in Hashching, an online marketplace for home loans that is putting pressure on banks and their brokers. The investment will be the first for Sapien Ventures, which was established last year by Victor Jiang and has raised a $50 million fund to invest in fintech and online marketplaces. Much of the capital has been raised from high-net-worth Chinese migrants after changes to the Significant Investor Visa program last year that require migrants bringing $5 million into Australia to invest at least $500,000 in eligible venture capital. Sapien Ventures has invested $1 million in Hashching, and is […]

Fintech hub Stone & Chalk aims to become regional ‘glue’

The nation’s newest fintech hub, Stone & Chalk, has identified five key Asian cities for the first stage of its FinTech Asia program as it ramps up plans to become the “glue” that connects the fintech ecosystem in the region. Stone & Chalk this week held its first meetings with the Hong Kong government’s investment promotion department, Invest Hong Kong, before moving to mainland China as part of the giant Australian trade delegation spearheaded by Malcolm Turnbull. It also hosted a panel session at the Hong Kong offices of HSBC on Monday evening that brought together Hong Kong’s key financial regulators — the Securities and Future Commission, the Office of […]

Banks and fintechs at war over password sharing

Micro investment company Acorns has accused ANZ Banking Group and other banks of telling customers they can’t share account passwords with the start-up, retarding its growth. Fintech Australia, the new lobby group for financial services start-ups, has formed an “open data subcommittee” to push for changes to the ePayments Code to make it clear that bank customers can give passwords to fintechs without banks having to provide approval. Sharing passwords with fintechs is a legal grey area. Acorns, which invests small change in exchange traded funds, lets users see their bank account activity and round up transactions to the nearest dollar. The app then invests the “change” in an investment […]
