Australia is targeting money laundering and terrorism in a sophisticated new collaboration with banks and fintech

A new government and private sector alliance was launched this morning to combat “serious financial crime”, including activities involving terrorism and money laundering. The new Fintel Alliance has brought together 19 partners including the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police, all four major banks, Australian Taxation Office, Western Union and fintech giant PayPal with intelligence agencies like AUSTRAC, ASIO and Australian Crime Commission. The organisation will target “terror financiers and gangs who deal in proceeds of crime, as well as white-collar criminals who think their crimes are victimless”, according to federal justice minister Michael Keenan. A new industry report calls for investment banks to take advantage of technological innovations by optimising outdated operating models, improving automation and undertaking a digital transformation. Australian consultants EY’s Capital Markets: building the investment bank of the future report reveals that, despite continued efforts to reduce costs, investment banks are becoming less efficient. These institutions remain reliant upon maintaining decades-old, complex and inflexible IT infrastructure. VentureCrowd completes first Israeli crowdfunding deal with Knowmail

VentureCrowd, Australia’s leading alternative assets investment platform, today announced the successful completion of a $155,000 crowdfunding round for Knowmail. The company is the first Israeli startup to be funded through VentureCrowd under a partnership with investment management firm Kentgrove Capital. VentureCrowd raised $155,000 in convertible notes, as part of a larger US$3 million funding round led by reputable venture capital firms CE Ventures, AfterDox, Plus Ventures and 2B Angels. Stockspot launches AI for financial advice

Local automated investment adviser and fund manager Stockspot has announced a move into artificial intelligence and machine learning, launching what it says is Australia’s first digital financial assistant. Stockspot founder and CEO Chris Brycki said the AI functionality analysed the data of thousands of clients and made targeted recommendations, helping investors optimise their portfolio as it learns.
