Innovation – NSW innovation minister says he will deliver three things the startup community is pleading for

He says one of the flagship policies of the state government last year was the establishment of a “world first” government data analytics centre facilitating data sharing between government agencies and allowing for the analysis of the effectiveness of policies. Dominello  says the better use of public data can also assist with one of the booming startup sectors in the state: fintech. With Stone & Chalk and the Tyro co-working space, Sydney is leading the way with fintech startups, and Dominello wants it to stay that way. “We’re already the centre in south-easy Asia for banking and finance, so the fintech sector in particular is very, very strong,” he says. Cryptocurrencies: what to study until there’s a ‘bachelor of bitcoin’

Joel Emery’s passion is cryptocurrencies, IT and tax law. It’s dense stuff, but despite a recent senate inquiry, legal treatment of new financial technologies is in its infancy so Emery’s Bachelor of Laws honours thesis at ANU is in some ways ahead of the regulators. Bitcoin emerged in 2008 as the first decentralised cryptocurrency, a form of cash that uses encrypted records to validate transactions and generate more bitcoin and, although crypto-currencies get a bad rap at times, the industry is estimated to already be worth more than $14 billion. Every day, ordinary people walk out of the house without a cent, yet buy coffee, lunch and dinner using a […]

ASIC’s Greg Medcraft says ‘robo advice’ can reduce fees and conflicts

Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Greg Medcraft says computer-generated financial advice, or “robo advice” could slash investment costs and eliminate conflicts of interest in the maligned financial planning industry. ASIC has established a “robo-advice taskforce”, which is investigating the suitability of potential entrants, who use computer algorithms to match investors with suitable assets at a lower cost than human advisers. ASIC wants to know how they intend to comply with best interest duties, how algorithms are developed and tested, and how the people running the start-ups are trained and compensated. In a speech to a Finsia lunch in Sydney on Thursday, Mr Medcraft said ASIC believed digital financial advice […]

The government innovation statement, […]

The FinTech future is here

Viewing the below chart of web searches, you could be forgiven for thinking that fintech has only really emerged in the past year. But the financial services sector has been innovating with technology for centuries – so why has it got so big recently? Source: Google The coming together of financial services and technology is nothing new. It will come as no surprise to know institutions have been using technology to improve their middle and back offices for as long as computers have been around. We used to call this banktech. In fact, banktech can be traced back to the 18th and 19th centuries when traders would use carrier pigeons […]

What You Really Need To Know About Working In Fintech

This is a great article to read if you’re thinking of working for or an Australian FinTech company From the outside, the tech industry can look like a homogenous sector, populated either by entrepreneurial whiz kids or bearded computer ‘geeks’. However, as with most industries, once you get beneath the surface, it becomes clear that the people who inhabit the tech industry are a varied bunch, utilising different skill sets and working in sub-sectors that have little in common. One of these sub-sectors, financial technology (or fintech), is attracting a range of talent, particularly workers who, in the past, may have been attracted to investment funds, law firms, or accountancy […]

Preference for digital payments makes Australian banking ripe for fintech disrupters

Australian consumers’ love of contactless payments has helped push the country up global rankings that measure the use of non-cash payments across the world. Australia had the fourth-highest number of non-cash payments per person in the world, the report by consultancy Capgemini and bank RBS said. There were more than 300 non-cash transactions per person a year, the report said, putting Australia behind only Finland, the United States and the Netherlands. This is an increased from a few years ago, when Australia was ranked sixth in the report, and the rise reflects strong growth in digital payments for smaller purchases, where “tap and go” services on credit and debit cards […]
