Forget Melbourne v Sydney, Australian fintech must take a global view
In 1901 there was such a massive spat between Sydneysiders and Melburnians over which city should be capital of the newly federated Australia that a whole new city (and territory) was formed. Fast forward more than 100 years and nothing has really changed. Squabbling continues around everything from which city has the better cuisine to which has the better events. All good, natural competitiveness, but then last year it encroached on one of our most promising industries – the emerging fintech startup ecosystem. This Sydney-Melbourne fintech civil war risked diverting founders and investors away from the global opportunity. Domestic squabbling was followed shortly by another irrational fear of overseas markets […]
Simply Wall St buys US rival
Australian sharemarket visualisation fintech Simply Wall St (simplywall.st) has acquired Capp.io, its main rival in the United States, for an undisclosed amount. Simply Wall St is a stock-picking tool using software that creates visual representations of users’ stock portfolios to help them quickly work out whether they are investing their money wisely. Founder and CEO Al Bentley said Atlanta based Capp.io – started by two university students – does something similar. It has about 5000 customers in the US which will be added to Simply Wall St’s 30,000. “The acquisition allows us to strengthen our presence on the US market, where we already have majority of our customers,” Mr Bentley […]
Fintech funding pressures banks
The big banks’ allegedly sluggish adoption of a regime to boost the flow of credit data among financial services companies will come under the spotlight of the Productivity Commission as the federal government steps up efforts to stimulate the burgeoning fintech industry. Scott Morrison yesterday revealed a range of measures to support financial technology companies, including cutting GST on digital currencies, such as bitcoin, and clarifying tax concessions for venture capital (VC) investments in fintech start-ups. The Treasurer also commissioned the Productivity Commission to review so-called comprehensive credit reporting and “outline options to increase data availability”, strengthening its scrutiny of the regime. “Fintech advances have the potential to radically transform […]
Innovation – NSW innovation minister says he will deliver three things the startup community is pleading for
He says one of the flagship policies of the state government last year was the establishment of a “world first” government data analytics centre facilitating data sharing between government agencies and allowing for the analysis of the effectiveness of policies. Dominello says the better use of public data can also assist with one of the booming startup sectors in the state: fintech. With Stone & Chalk and the Tyro co-working space, Sydney is leading the way with fintech startups, and Dominello wants it to stay that way. “We’re already the centre in south-easy Asia for banking and finance, so the fintech sector in particular is very, very strong,” he says. Stone & Chalk rides the fintech disruption wave
The launch for fintech hub Stone & Chalk was oversubscribed. By 7pm, 500 people had descended on the party, donning coloured T-shirts to signal where they belonged. Red T-shirts designated institutional sponsors, green was for resident start-ups, charcoal for friends, blue for government and pink for media (funny). The happiest people wore green. The 120 residents from 41 start-ups who had won the chance to work on a floor of the AMP Centre, found themselves regaled by bank chiefs, politicians, venture capitalists, accountancy heads, lobbyists and each other. The biggest boast was: “I used to be a banker.” And it was said by those in green, who hoped to disrupt […]
Melbourne fintechs rival Sydney, but help needed
Melbourne peer-to-peer lender MoneyPlace has identified a rash of new fintechs that have started up in the city in the past five years, but argues they in danger of being lured offshore without government help. The first survey of Melbourne’s fintech scene by the lender’s founder Stuart Stoyan has uncovered more than 500 people being employed by 52 companies – three-quarters of which are less than two years old. KPMG released a study of fintechs in Australia in late 2014. It identified 950 start-up businesses in Sydney and about 350 in Melbourne. It has no exact figures for what proportion are fintechs, but estimated there are at least 150 based […]
