{"id":38204,"date":"2019-09-04T12:33:35","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T02:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/australianfintech.com.au\/?p=38204"},"modified":"2021-02-03T19:41:29","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T09:41:29","slug":"the-female-trio-behind-avestix-equity-that-are-shaking-up-the-boys-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/australianfintech.com.au\/the-female-trio-behind-avestix-equity-that-are-shaking-up-the-boys-club\/","title":{"rendered":"The female trio behind Avestix Equity that are shaking up the boys\u2019 club"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Finance, development, construction and real estate are industries still dominated by men, but three Brisbane businesswomen are tackling that notion head on, launching Australia\u2019s first-ever crowd-sourced funding company to invest in residential real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Lindeque, Kaelene McElligott and Debra Barber make up the all-female board of directors of Avestix Equity Pty Ltd, providing ownership of a residential property company to all Australians for as little as $500.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Susan Lindeque says the company has already attracted 63 investors since launching last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am always looking at innovative ideas around finance and capitalism and realised that equity crowdfunding provided a way for those people who would never be able to own their own home to enter the property market with low risk, while giving them a long-term investment,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Marketing Officer Debra Barber said it offered new ways for people of all demographics to enter the property market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in my twenties, there was nowhere like this to invest. Even millennials can put in just $500 and long term, it could really help them get ahead,\u201d Ms Barber said.<\/p>\n<p>As chartered accountants and businesswomen they\u2019ve always had to navigate the boys\u2019 club, but the trio agree those skills have helped them create the successful company they have today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is difficult, it still is very much a boys club,\u201d CFO Kaelene McElligott says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are not excluded, but they\u2019re not included either. You have to stand up for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Susan says the make-up of the Avestix Equity Pty Ltd board wasn\u2019t driven by gender, she\u2019s certainly proud of the influence the team can make on the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really important. I wanted to create something with a more female touch and try to stop the stereotype that it\u2019s just another male dominated project in the finance or construction industry,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>Like so many working mothers, and with eight children between them, their other big challenge is juggling their home and work lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it\u2019s very hard to find that balance because I\u2019m such a workaholic but it\u2019s because I absolutely love what I\u2019m doing,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I need to stay up until 1 o\u2019clock in the morning to get stuff done, that\u2019s when I\u2019m doing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to continue building Avestix Equity into a large landlord investment company that will provide long term returns for its shareholders. More importantly, to provide jobs and affordable rent for everyday Australians will be fulfilling,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Avestix Equity crowdfunding campaign is open for another 48 days.
