Dart aims for a United States of Fintech

Australian tech entrepreneurs have launched a new digital home for the global fintech community, providing an agnostic platform that founders hope will one day become the seat for an inclusive and encyclopaedic fintech commonwealth. Founder and CEO, Cameron Dart, told AB+F that the International FinTech platform, combines a web portal and directory to meet growing demand from the global community to have a dedicated, online and natively fintech presence for a sector that transcends borders. “We like to think of it as the beginnings of a LinkedIn for fintech,” Dart said. This week’s launch, built on the back of the original Australian FinTech, already encompasses more than 1,000 global fintech companies […]

New payments platform could create army of fintech innovation, says NPP boss

The man overseeing the rollout of Australia’s new payments system says every business across the economy that makes or receives payments could become a fintech innovator by developing “overlay” services to enhance customers’ experiences. Construction of the “new payments platform” (NPP), which from October will allow money and data to move between bank accounts instantaneously, has been driven by the Reserve Bank of Australia for the past four years after an earlier bank-driven idea for a similar system collapsed. The core philosophy of the NPP is the separation of the infrastructure – which provides a messaging, addressing and settlement system – from a layer for new products that will be […]

One country dominates the global bitcoin market

Almost all bitcoin trading is done in China. The share of the cryptocurrency that’s traded via China’s mainland currency escalated over the past few years, overtaking the US dollar as the dominant currency. From less than a 10% share in January 2012, the yuan now makes up nearly 100% of all bitcoin trading. Bitcoin surged 120% last year, outperforming every other currency in the world. It kicked off 2017 by rising above $1,000 for the first time since 2013.Those moves were made possible largely because of China. Volumes of bitcoin trading increased as China’s foreign reserves shrank, by about 8% to $3.05 trillion in 2016. Meanwhile, the yuan weakened against […]

FinTech: UK Vs Australia

by Matthew Parker, The MitchelLake Group Having recently moved from the UK to Australia, I have been excited to observe and experience first-hand some of the differences between the UK FinTech ecosystem and that of its Antipodean cousin. I do not, by any means, pretend to be an expert, but I have had the privilege of working with and alongside some of the most exciting FinTech businesses and individuals across multiple markets. Any observation I am able to draw comes from a place of passion and sincere enthusiasm as well as a helpful dose of experience. So without further ado, let’s compare and contrast. The UK hit its stride at […]

What is going on with bitcoin?

By Elizabeth Barry, Senior Writer at Finder.com.au A three-year high and then a notable drop, now it’s being tipped to replace gold. Bitcoin, the world’s first cryptocurrency, has had a tumultuous start to 2017. The digital currency, following strong adoption in China, ended 2017 on an all-time high according to Bloomberg data. The currency reached USD$1,140.64 and also surpassed its market capitalisation, standing at USD$16.1 billion. However, on 6 January 2017 bitcoin saw a sharp drop. This drop also coincided with a 1% offshore trading increase of the Chinese yuan. While this may have been a coincidence, it highlighted the strong influence the two currencies have on each other. Bitcoin […]

A broken chain of investment providers: why investors pay the price

by Doug Morris, CEO, Sharesight Buying food from a shop is so simple, it’s something many of us take for granted – but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of taking say, a carton of eggs to the checkout, imagine having to first ask the farmer if they’re free-range or caged, the grader for the size and quality, the Food Standards board for nutritional information, and (finally) the shop for the price. Investors face a similar proposition every day. Crucial information such as performance data, tax reporting, share dividends, corporate actions, and cost bases are spread across online brokers, share registrars, investment platforms, wraps and even old-fashioned spreadsheets. Bringing these […]
