This Australian fintech leader says cryptos won’t replace traditional currencies in ‘another three lifetimes’

The value of bitcoin lies in its use as a finite commodity protected by rock-solid cryptography, rather than a currency used to buy goods and services, according to Loretta Joseph, chair of the Australian Digital Commerce Association (ADCA). Joseph spoke to Business Insider following reports that Australian crypto trading exchanges must now comply with standards set out by financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC. The announcement followed an 18-month consultation period between AUSTRAC and the ADCA.“We have defined crypto as a commodity,” Joseph said. “It’s not a currency for use as a means of exchange.” “There was recently a key legal case in New York which defined bitcoin as a commodity. So […]

Local cryptocurrency exchange gets certified

As investors and regulators around the world attempt to peer into the deep, dark jungle that is digital currency, one Australian exchange operator hopes it has found a way to shine a bit of light by becoming the first business of its kind to get industry certification. BTC Markets is the first Australian exchange to be certified by the Australian Digital Commerce Association, the industry body for the digital currency sector. The Melbourne-based cryptocurrency exchange demonstrated that “rigorous” standards were achieved in meeting the expectations of multiple Australian regulators, most notably AUSTRAC. Operators of Australian exchanges for Bitcoin and other digital currencies need to register with the country’s anti-money laundering […]

Aussie Bitcoin exchanges now need to register with the govt

Operators of Australian exchanges for Bitcoin and other digital currencies will now need to register with the country’s anti-money laundering agency after new legislation passed through parliament. AUSTRAC has been given the authority to monitor local cryptocurrency exchanges through the new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Amendment Bill 2017. The bill was introduced in August to combat the threat of serious financial crime, in the wake of revelations about the Commonwealth Bank’s breaches of money laundering laws. It was also spurred on by global watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) findings of significant deficiencies in Australia’s anti-money laundering framework two years prior. The new law, which passed through the senate yesterday, for […]

Peppermint entering lucrative international remittance market

Peppermint has created a wholly owned subsidiary, Peppermint Payments Pty Ltd (PPPL) to provide international remittances in the Australian market. Reflecting Australia’s history as a “land of immigrants”, this market is already large and growing faster than GDP, but supply has been shrinking due largely to increased compliance requirements. PPPL is registered with Austrac as both a remitter and a remittance network provider, and our AML/CTF program has been approved by our Australian bank. PPPL will use the brand “BIZMOTO” which is being trade-marked in both Australia and the Philippines. Agreements have been signed with multiple providers reflecting a carefully planned “best of breed” approach and architecture. Emphasis on proven […]

Peer-to-peer lenders lead increase in personal loans

Personal loan applications rose strongly during the December 2016 quarter, with much of the growth coming from online marketplace lenders. The latest Quarterly Consumer Credit Demand Index from credit agency Veda shows the number of personal loan applications for the December 2016 quarter was 12.4 per cent higher than the December 2015 quarter. “Growth in personal loan applications is predominantly coming from products offered by new entrants in the personal lending space, beyond traditional credit card and auto finance markets,” says Angus Luffman, Veda’s general manager of consumer risk. Neu Capital ready to disrupt mid-market fundraising

While Cyrus Church and Edward Jones were working for Royal Bank of Scotland in Sydney offloading corporate loan portfolios in the wake of the financial crisis, the opacity of fundraising for mid-market companies became starkly apparent. Church recalls large sales of RBS loans such as Royal North Shore Hospital and the Cross City Tunnel running smoothly as “they were clean processes, the universe of investors was known and the information quality was sound. But as soon as you delve into some of the smaller, mid-market companies, it was extremely clunky and manual. We thought: surely there is a way to use technology to make the process more efficient?” Inspired by […]
